ELECTRONIC HEART

Game of Love was released within the Random Access Memories album in 2013.

An iconic duo

Daft Punk is a French electro music group composed of two members.

They began music in 1993 and became famous worldwide since 1995. They are known for not showing their faces, instead they're wearing helmets inspired by the movie Phantom of the Paradise (directed by Brian de Palma). This makes them look like robots, one is silver and the other is golden.
The album Random Access Memories is their most successful one.

A parallel between robot and human

The name of the album come from the acronym RAM which stands for Random Access Memory. It designates the computer memory.

Actually, the Daft Punk believe that there are some similarities between a hard drive and the human brain.

In Game of Love, the use of vocoder make it sound like an actual robot is singing.
The song is about a lost love, and even though it's an android singing, we still can feel the pain in his voice. Producing robotic vocals that carry emotions was the exact intention of the group.

AutoTune & artists

There's this thing today where the recorded human voice is processed to try to feel robotic.
Thomas Bangalter
(The silver Daft Punk)

Here, Bangalter is talking about the massive use of Autotune in the music industry. It's an effect originally used to correct the false notes, but now many singers are using it, especially rappers. It was used for the first time in Believe, a song by the American singer Cher in 1998.

Autotune give a metalized effect to the voice that we can qualify of robotic if the effect is strongly used.

Also, this song brings the following question: can robots have a broken heart when they're supposed to be only machines?

The instrumental is kind of chill, but the intonation of the voice and the lyrics add a very nostalgic and sad feeling to it.

My advice

Personally, I always loved Daft Punk ever since my childhood. Random Access Memories was one of the first CD's I bought. I can only recommend anyone to listen to this album (and even the entire Daft Punk discography) as it is a masterpiece.
